Dudley Foster

Dudley Foster is an American mechanical engineer and deepāsea submersible pilot who became one of the longestāserving pilots of the manned submersible DSV Alvin at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. A former U.S. Navy pilot with a degree in mechanical engineering from California State Polytechnic University, he joined WHOI in the early 1970s, trained to operate Alvin, and went on to lead hundreds of deepāsea dives, contributing to major scientific discoveries including hydrothermal vents and undersea explorations like the wreck of the RMS Titanic. Foster also served as expedition leader, overseeing logistics and training for Alvin operations throughout his multiādecade career.
