Visconti is one of the best intellectual filmmaker. The Conversation Piece is still very much intellectual compare to his other masterpieces. Konrad character is very complex and tragic . He clearly sees the emptiness of bourgeois life, yet at the same time he benefits from it. He complains about and despises everything around him, refusing to be like them, while living like a lord. But some bourgeois people become obsessed with him because he appears so charming and different, and thus they desire him. He is intelligent and self-destructive, yet not mature enough to understand that the people he wishes to punish and condemn through a tragic act will eventually move on and forget him. Line at the end of the film "Even the pain is a fleeing thing" hit hard.
